I am not going to lie, it's been a long couple of weeks. I am still recovering from my surgery, but doing much better. I had my post-op appointment this week and everything looks great. The doctor told me that 1 in 8 people have their appendix out. It is crazy to me that it is that normal. Why do we even have an appendix if so many of them need to come out? Just another question I am adding to my list to ask God when I am in heaven! I have several... including "why did you create spiders?" They are gross and icky and no one should have to look at them.
Joel got jury duty this past week. 50 people get summoned, 7 are chosen, Joel was one of them! He was even elected to be the Foreman (sp?). He was in this case for 4 days. It was just a civil suit, but it was long. The worst part is that he had Tuesday and Wednesday off of work last week, but he had jury duty! Big bummer! We are just happy it wrapped up on Friday night since we are leaving for Alaska on Monday.
On top of recovering, getting back to work and everything else this week we had a dear family friend pass away. Karla has been working with my mom at Penton ever since she started there. They had become very close over the years and I was honored to have the opportunity to get to know her too through working at Penton and through her relationship with my mom. I can't even begin to describe this woman to you. She was a ball full of spunk and sass! She only stood a little over 5ft (a little more with her stilletos), but she had a HUGE personality! She didn't know a stranger, she was the most accepting and outgoing person I know. She was a true animal lover. Her generosity was inspiring and you couldn't help but smile every single time you saw her! I loved that she was a good friend to my mom and I will miss her so much. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago. It was very aggressive and even with surgery and treatment, we were somewhat prepared (as prepared as you can be). Her funeral was on Friday and it was so bittersweet. It's bittersweet because you want her to be healed, done with the pain, the treatments... but sad that she isn't here anymore. Karla's funeral was definitely a celebration of her life, her heart, her contagious personality. It also provided a sense of peace and reality, if you will. Funerals are always hard, but also such a rollercoaster of emotions. It's so weird that you can go from hysterically laughing as people are sharing stories, to crying so hard as you come to the realization that she is gone. The great thing to think about is, with anyone who passes, that they have made their mark on this world and rubbed off on others. So, in a way, they are still here. I am lucky that I get to see some of the "Karla sass" in my mom!!
It's a rollercoaster. I am happy she is healed and happy in heaven right now, but she will be missed terribly... by so many. That is my little tribute that I just felt I needed to share, to get it out, to process. Sorry for the heaviness.
Oh, and a sidenote PSA from Lisa Russell:
"LADIES!! GET THOSE TA TAs, HOOTERS, BOOBIES, OR IN MY CASE "ITTY BITTY TITTIES" (whatever you want to call them) CHECKED EVERY YEAR!
EARLY DETECTION IS THE BEST PROTECTION!!!"
Thank you!
On a brighter note, this is what our friends do for entertainment:
He makes any bad day happy

Sitting on our balcony in the warm sun!
